A story by Class E at Badsey First School [and Peter]
[pictures to follow shortly...] Everybody knows that rainbows come when the rain and the sun are both in the sky at the same time, and they go when the sun goes behind a cloud. But this is a story about a rainbow that stayed; and about some dinosaurs, a unicorn and a princess.
One sunny day, in the smooth blue water of the sea, the swimosaurus was swimming. With four big flippers, and a long neck, he was the only swimming dinosaur, and his name was Tim. He wove his way, among the fish and the sharks, and floated to the shore, to where he could reach the leaves of the trees that he liked to nibble, and where he could meet his friend, Tang the Diplodocus.
Tang was there waiting, and together they splashed and nibbled, and they played their favourite game of ‘school’, with Tim as the teacher giving lessons to his tall pupil Tang.
As they played, a small rain cloud blew across the blue sky, and some little raindrops plopped into the sea. The sun was still shining, and the rainbow came. It was a beautiful rainbow, bending all the way up to the middle of the sky, over the water, and then back down, ending just where the water was splashing on the beach.
‘Look, rainbow, rainbow’, shouted Tim, and he swam over to the end of the rainbow. He had not had any breakfast, and he was hungry. ‘It looks delicious, let’s eat it’ he said.
Now rainbows look delicious, but they taste horrible, especially the red bits, so soon the two dinosaurs were spitting out their mouthfuls of rainbow, but the princess did not realise that, and she was sure that the rainbow would be eaten all up.
Princess Elaine was passing through the sky, on the back of her beautiful white and yellow flying unicorn. She was wearing a lovely pink dress, a red shawl, and a crown of gold and silver. She was on her way to the castle of her friend Princess Ella. But she had seen the dinosaurs eating the rainbow, and made her unicorn swoop down to save it.
As they got to the end of the rainbow, Princess Elaine drew her magic wand, and pointed it at them.
‘Peeky, leeky, peeky leeky, frogs you must be’ she cried, and immediately Tim and Tang turned into little green frogs, and hopped away onto the beach.
‘Just in time’, said the princess, ‘now I must make sure the rainbow comes to no more harm. Peeky leeky, peeky leeky, rainbow, freeze!’ She pointed the wand at the whole of the rainbow, and even though a cloud was passing over the sun, it stayed frozen in the sky.
Her job done, Princess Elaine and her unicorn flew on to her friend’s castle. Guarding the door was a huge many-coloured dragon. For a moment the unicorn was scared, and would not go on, but the dragon knew the princess, and he waved them past with a big green claw. King James was very pleased to see Princess Elaine, and they had a big big party.
Meanwhile, that night, when the stars came out in the sky, they met a beautiful rainbow, the very first rainbow that had ever stayed out at night. They were very excited, and they had great fun, sliding down him, spinning round him and looking at all of his bright colours in the night. The rainbow was excited too, at meeting the stars for the first time.
In that part of the sky, if you can find it, the rainbow is still frozen to this day. If you climb into a special coloured star, and press the black button, you can fly up there into the sky, and you can play too, with the stars, the clouds, the big cloud called the universe, and the rainbow that stayed into the night. |
