The true story behind the play Heads or Tails, is the fascinating story of Steward Street School.

These pictures, from the Christian Schiller archive at the Institute of E$ducation, which is affiliated to the University of London [contact details below],  were taken in 1947, at Steward Street School in Ladywood in Birmingham.  This school, in the slums of the city, under the headship of Peter Stone and then Ken Scott, carried out a ten-year experiment in creative approaches to primary education.  The children did dance, drama, art and craft for large portions of the school day, and yet their literacy and numeracy levels were as high as any comparable school at the time...  These photographs show the level of commitment of the school, and of the ten and eleven year old pupils themselves.......
