The Giant Spider

Once there was a spider.  Not an ordinary spider, but a great big giant spider.  It was flat but very wide, as big as a house with lots of black hairy legs.  The spider lived in a giant web, built of thick rope, between five trees in the woods.  As long as the spider was in his web, everything was fine, but one day he decided he was bored with the web, and wanted to go on a trip.

It was night-time, and the moon was out.  The giant spider climbed down from the giant web, and went for a walk along the ground.  Just then, there was a group of friends, out for a walk, to get some fresh air.  In the quiet night they heard the pattering sound of the spiders feet.  They screamed and jumped over each other, shouting ‘Run away!  Run away!’  They ran and ran, and other animals joined the chase.  The bees, the caterpillar and the people, they all ran away from the spider.  He was friendly and only wanted to play, but they all ran away because he was so BIG.

They ran towards the town, but with his big legs the spider got closer and closer to them and finally caught up.   They were frightened as he came right up.  They were shaking and calling out.

‘I am not going to eat you.  All I want is to play a little game of peek-a-boo with you.  Please play with me in the woods’.

The people were really pleased that they weren’t going to be eaten, and they agreed to play with the spider.  They play together all the time these days, and if you go to the woods, you may see a giant spider playing hide and seek.
